Recent trends of pneumonia morbidity in US Naval personnel.

چکیده
urrently, respiratory diseases account for 25-30 per cent of the total infectious and parasitic disease admissions among active duty Navy and Marine Corps (henceforth naval) personnel. Among these admissions, the greatest medical cause of lost workdays is pneumonia, due both to its frequency of diagnosis and to the relatively long hospitalization period associated with this disease. Because of the diversity of pathogens associated with the pneumonia syndrome, pertinent epidemiological information is difficult to extract from clinical observation or health surveys, except in the most general sense. A closed system of health care, such as that provided by the Navy, offers an opportunity to evaluate the significance of this disease in terms of its epidemiology, and to identify new areas for research which will further our understanding of factors contributing to patterns of pneumonia occurrence. The data available for study were hospital admission records of active duty naval personnel with primary diagnoses of pneumonia. By calculating and comparing specific admission rates for pneumonia, we identified high risk groups within the population and the temporal trends associated with morbidity.

CONTEXT Acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AEP) is a rare disease of unknown etiology characterized by respiratory failure, radiographic infiltrates, and eosinophilic infiltration of the lung. OBJECTIVES To describe a case series of AEP, illustrate the clinical features of this syndrome, and report the results of an epidemiologic investigation. متن کاملPredicting and reducing voluntary outflow in the Royal Navy.
Introduction This research speaks to one of the major concerns facing the modern Royal Navy (RN), especially given the current economic and political climate – that is how to achieve and maintain the correct level of manpower to meet functional and operational requirements. The rate of Voluntary Outflow (VO: previously referred to as Premature Voluntary Release) has remained above the stable lo...
متن کاملHospital-acquired pneumonia and its management.
Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Classifying the patient's pneumonia by the presence or absence of risk factors helps determine what organisms need to be considered as etiologic agents so that empiric antibiotic therapy can be initiated while cultures are pending. Medical care personnel can also use preventive strategies to...
متن کاملPneumonia outbreak associated with group a Streptococcus species at a military training facility.
BACKGROUND Although group A streptococci (GAS) infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality, outbreaks of associated pneumonia are rare. We report an outbreak of GAS pneumonia that occurred at a US military training camp. METHODS Standard epidemiologic and laboratory procedures were used to characterize the outbreak and causative organism(s). A case-control study and determination ...
متن کاملMortality, survival and residual injury burden of Royal Navy and Royal Marine combat casualties sustained in 11-years of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We present eleven years of prospectively-gathered data defining the full spectrum of the United Kingdom's (UK) Naval Service (Royal Navy and Royal Marines) casualties, and characterise the injury patterns, recovery and residual functional burden from the conflicts of the last decade. The UK Military Trauma Registry was searched for all Naval Service personnel injured between March 2003 and Apri...
